Responds to emergency and non-emergency requests for ambulance services. EMTs administer pre-hospital and inter-facility medical care in accordance with all rules and regulations set forth by NYSDOH and local protocols, HUNTER EMS policies and procedures.

Duties, Accountability and Responsibilities:

  • Provides basic life support as needed in compliance with state, local, and HUNTER EMS procedures
  • Drives vehicles in accordance with HUNTER EMS policies and procedures and all NYSDMV regulations
  • Operates communication system in compliance with the Hunter EMS Manual
  • Performs pre-hospital duties in compliance with state and local protocols, as well as HUNTER EMS' P&P
  • Maintains inventory of ambulance through the course of each shift, restocking supplies used at the end of shift
  • Performs daily vehicle inspection and DOH compliance inspection
  • Inspect all vehicles daily for any damage or repair needs
  • Ensure vehicle is stocked and sealed
  • Maintains patient care supplies and equipment is in response-ready, clean, good working order
  • Conform to dress code and personal hygiene standards
  • Respond to all calls quickly and in a safe and efficient manner
  • Accurately and legibly complete all paperwork required by HUNTER EMS
  • Actively participate in the safe delivery of patient care and maintain a safe environment for all of our patients
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
  • Professionally establish a positive rapport with each patient and the patients family ensuring a gentle and attentive transport
  • Assists the Paramedic as needed
  • Provides high quality services in a courteous manner to every patient without regard to socioeconomic status, personality traits, disability, appearance, sexual preference, national origin, age, race, religion or sex
  • Conscientiously and with good will, speak and act in a manner that maintains the integrity of HUNTER EMS

  • In order to operate any of the above you must be cleared by the Director of Training

Duties, Accountability and Responsibilities:

  • Answers all incoming telephone calls in Communications Center
  • Obtain and documents all pertinent transport information
  • Obtain and documents all critical information on each transport via computer or paper.
  • Request including, but not necessarily limited to:
    • Date of transport request, Person making the request, Sending facility, Patient destination, Mode of transportation (ambulance, ambulette, livery, etc.), All pertinent patient demographic data, Determination of Medical Necessity (if applicable), Level of patient care required vs. requested (ALS, BLS, Ambulette, etc.), All Billing information, Accepting and sending physician when applicable, Diagnosis and Past Medical History when applicable, Prioritizes transport requests as needed, Provides customer service / support liaison to clients & customers, Maintains a professional phone etiquette all times, Determines customer transportation needs and schedules transportation requests as appropriate, Obtains pre-transport insurance authorizations as required, Schedules all transports in conjunction with the dispatcher
  • When scheduling early morning calls, the on-duty supervisor must be notified in order to arrange proper resources to handle the call.

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Dispatcher is responsible for receiving, scheduling, assigning, and monitoring the intake and transfer of patient transports to facilities.

Duties, Accountability and Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize transport requests according to the patient's acuity to ensure that emergent transport requests receive priority response.
  • Receive and document appropriate call, patient and billing information, booking form and Pre-transport critical cares run sheet.
  • Maintain departmental and regulatory records, including computer entry of call information, billing forms and patient reports.
  • Monitor ambulance crew status and locations throughout the tour.
  • Provide customer service to both sending and receiving hospitals and facilities as required to ensure the smooth, scheduled transport of patients between facilities.
  • Obtain the appropriate information required to ensure that the transport team is prepared for the transport, including patient care information, patient sending and receiving locations, accepting physicians and sending physicians full names and any other appropriate data required to ensure optimum patient care/billing (contact precautions, steps in residence and patient weight)
  • Respond immediately to transport team requests for Medical Control Physician intervention. Ensure clear communications between the Medical Control Physician and the ambulance crew.
  • Document the daily events, which effect the operations of the ambulance service in the Dispatch Logbook.
  • Arrange emergency shift coverage for sick calls, as required, with consultation from Supervisory Personnel as necessary.
  • Communicate with a Supervisor, on matters concerning any events or problems that may occur in the course of the shift.
  • Check Pre-Hospital Care Reports daily to ensure all PCR’s are accounted for.
  • At all shift changes all narcotic keys must be accounted for at the start of the shift. If any key is not accounted for, the Director of Training should be notified immediately.
  • Carry out any direction given by his/her Supervisor or Director as necessary.
  • Follow and direct procedures, including those pertaining to accidents and breakdowns to ensure the safety of the patient and ambulance crew.
  • Maintain dispatch center in a clean and organized manner.
  • Obtain any pre-transport insurance authorizations, as required to expedite payment of services, including Medicaid pre-approval numbers.
  • Maintain familiarity with all departmental polices and procedures as they relate to crews and vehicles to ensure that compliance and standard of care criteria are met.
  • Upon receiving a transport request, the following documents must be completed prior to performing the transport:
    • Ambulance Transport
    • Booking Form
    • Physicians Certificate of Medical Necessity (if appropriate)
    • Must advise hospital to complete "Interfacility Transport Orders." (if appropriate)
    • To confirm with the crew that all-pertinent information from the sending hospital is correct.
    • The Dispatcher will notify the on duty / on call Supervisor with all direct to the catherization lab and IABP (Intra-aortic Balloon Pump) calls without delay when the call is received.

Physical Requirements:

Experience:
  • Should have working knowledge of ambulance operations and possess general knowledge of local area geography
